Loni,
It is very frustrating when those with (perceived, if not real)
greater "authority" hold fast to bad information. With both MDs and
nursing staff, I have developed the following approach over the
years.
"What I'm saying may be different that what you've heard or done in
the past. Certainly breastfeeding itself doesn't change. However,
our understanding of it, how it works, and how to make it "work"
better does change. As new evidence-based (they do respect that
term) information becomes available, I have changed my approach.
Based of the most recent research, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx has been
shown to be the msot effective approach."
I often cite an example where I have changed what I teach and do
based on newer information. For example, I remember when "warm
before, cold after" was the standard approach to breast fullness/
engorgement. Current evidence says cold only. I remember when we
were almost paranoid about getting baby to take both sides
expecially in the first few days to the extent that we might have
suggested switching after 2-3 minutes if baby would only nurse a
total of 5 minutes! Now it's "finish the first side first".
When we are willing to admit we have changed based on current
research, the other party(s) may be more willing to look at new
info. Then again there are some who never change. I feel if we can
educate the new docs while they are still "malleable", some of the
die-hards will fall away by attrition.

change after 30+ years
