I'm interested to hear what others have to say in response to Nikki's great question. Personally, I would surmise, some, BUT I have not found that nipple shields are generally that great for tongue tie. In hospitals where weighed feeds are not done, a baby who is having difficulty latching is often given a nipple shield and then baby latches well. But the baby with tongue tie does not drink well. So mother goes home and thinks her baby latches well but that she doesn't have enough, or baby's weight gain isn't good so she starts pumping and is confused about why baby's weight gain hasn't been good when she is able to pump so much milk (if her milk supply hasn't plummeted due to the fact that baby was removing very little milk with the use of the nipple shield). If a baby doesn't have proper tongue motility to breastfeed, as I have seen even on mother's with great soft pliable nipples, then a nipple shield is not my best bet for solving the problem even though it may make a baby at least not fall off the breast.
Now, I haven't checked out the new dvd yet, and I am wondering if the recommendation for a nipple shield when baby is having trouble post-frenotomy is actually to somehow encourage proper sucking and bring out those instincts with something firmer than the real nipple on the tongue when baby seems not to be sucking well on the mother's real self?
