Lisa states, in regard to helping a mom reduce her oversupply::
"she will try a pacifier (which I almost never otherwise recommend!)
to help
him settle as he seems to need to suck without always getting milk"

When disucssing pacifier use with parents I will suggest that for
those times that baby seems to need some extra sucking and for
whatever reason, comfort sucking at breast isn't feasible or
acceptable to the parents, they use a clean knuckle or finger. I
find it easy to slip the middle joint of my little finger in baby's
mouth and they will often be content to suck on that if they really
aren't looking for food. (I will do this if baby is unhappy and mom
is busy in the bathroom-one of those situations where baby might
just have to wait a bit.) A fingertip also works, but it is best to
let baby draw it in over several sucks to simulate the elongation of
the breast tissue which may not happen immediately.
Some babies will not accept the knuckle or finger, but when they
will, I feel it is a better alternative than a pacifier. While not
exactly the same, a fleshy finger is not as different from the feel
of a breast as a chunk of rubber or plastic. Also, baby is still
being held and comforted and not laying by himself with only a dummy
(I really like that term!) for comfort.

Winnie
