The ultrasound exposure during diagnostic examinations is about 1/1000 of
the time that the machine is on. The transducer sends out a very short
signal and then 'listens' for its echo for 999/1000 of the time. So I think
the assumption that there is no significant physical reaction in the tissue
being examined is likely to be valid.
What it does to a woman's MER to be followed with a transducer during a feed
or during pumping, is probably more measurable. My only exposure to the
research team in Australia was through a fascinating presentation by the
Swedish son of the founder of Medela, and it looked to me like a very
relaxed, friendly place where the women felt comfortable, and valued, and
since the women volunteered to participate, they were probably not inhibited
by the setting, the presence of the researcher or the equipment.
