Hi all,

I have a Mom whose baby was born Monday. From our discussion, I THINK she
meant that the baby aspirated the meconium. Baby is on an IV and
antibiotics.

Mom was EXTREMELY swollen from IV's given to her. She is have great
difficulty pumping, hospital pump. Was instructed to give to pump every 3
hours for 15 min. She is pumping on a regular schedule and is not pumping
at night. Is only getting 3-4 drops that appear yellow. Baby was given
formula yesterday by feeding tube and "it sat in her stomach".

I tried not to offer too much information since she needed a listening ear.
I asked her if I could call her back after looking some things up. (This is
what I say when I have different information than what the hospital offers.)
I told her I would be checking in with LLL and Lactnet.

>From a recent thread here on Lactnet, I told her that there are other cases
where women had trouble pumping while experiencing severe swelling. And not
to panic about the milk supply. I suggested a good goal would be to have a
milk supply ready and waiting for when the baby is ready. Because I think
there is already talk about her stopping pumping. I just tried to sound
encouraging, now I need to help her formulate a game plan that supports
breastfeeding. She is at a hospital that does not have a lactation
consultant or breastfeeding friendly policies. She is very anxious to
breastfeed or least offer breastmilk.

I would like to hear recommendations from this community about how to get
pumping to be more successful AND I would like to know if there is any
reason why a baby that is sick like this cannot go to breast? And anything
else you think might be helpful, very seldom do I talk to moms with sick
babies.

Gratefully,
