Hi Janna.  From my recent gentian violet experience my .02 of wisdom:
1.  It wears off in a couple of days.
2.  I found it a little more effective to paint the areola directly as you
did, but less messy to paint the inside of the baby's mouth instead --
doesn't get all over his chin and nose.

(Btw, watch out for the purple spit-up -- )
