After writing my question, I realized that my perceptions about first foods
are influenced by the current mommy group I'm facilitating. I'm thinking we
may need a little nutrition update there; they're limited on the yellow
vegetables in general.

Also, when I read "first foods," my bring says *first* food, which in my
neck of the woods is almost universally fortified rice cereal. I wasn't
thinking, "What do mothers offer their babies in the second half of the
first year of life" or even "What do mothers offer their babies at 9
months."

Interesting that mothers are being discouraged from making their own baby
foods. If I'd had to do much more than mash up something that was already
on my plate, my children might not have had solid food until they could fix
it themselves! ;-)
