I greatly appreciate the help and information I have received through Lactnet. I am amazed at the generosity of time and experience that people share. Thank you all so much.

My question this time is regarding duramorph, used as an epidural that (I think) is intended to extend pain relief postpartum. What I see and have been told is that, is addition to babies being more sleepy due to continued drug infusion, moms areolas and nipples become soft and enlarged, leading to "flat" nipples in many, many moms I see in the hospital. I would like to know if others with more experience can share more information about this drug with me and its effects on breastfeeding. I previously worked in a different hospital where it was not used, and those babies sucked! I can bearly get a baby on breast until day two.

Thanks,
Patricia Ellis, RN, IBCLC
