I have permission to repost this response from the CDC - I still think their suggestion to have a mother express and feed her milk when sick with the flu is maddening. . . .

Subject: RE: Breastfeeding and Novel H1-N1

Dear Ms. Escobar,

?

Thank you very much for?your email, and for?bringing?your?concern?about the tone of the CDC guidance on breastfeeding and H1N1 to our attention.

?

In total, there are?5 documents that include breastfeeding information specifically.? They are:

Feeding You Baby: What Parents Should Know?http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/infantfeeding.htm?

Considerations Regarding Novel H1N1 Flu Virus in Obstetric Settingshttp://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance/obstetric.htm

What Pregnant Women Should Know About H1N1 Virus?http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance/pregnant.htm

Pregnant Women and Novel Influenza A (H1N1) Virus: Considerations for Clinicianshttp://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/clinician_pregnant.htm

Interim Recommendations for Facemask and Respirator Use to Reduce Novel Influenza A (H1N1) Virus Transmissionhttp://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/masks.htm?

This?guidance is the result of extensive input and consultation across CDC and externally across the spectrum of pediatric and adult?infectious disease?and intrapartum care.? This collaboration?yielded valuable and careful consideration of?the many different dimensions and factors involved in?deciding the most prudent approach to preventing transmission to the infant of an infected mother.? In particular, we have been very fortunate to be able to consult with?Robert?Lawrence and Steven?Buescher, who?have generously?shared their wisdom, experience, and unparalleled expertise in management of lactation and infectious disease.??Among others, they have?provided thoughtful input into both the immediate and intended consequences of?a wide range of possible?recommendations?about breastfeeding and H1N1?as well as?possible unintended and more distal effects that could result from them.

?

The many unknowns in the?realm of?H1N1?make all of these?decisions especially complex.? Pregnant women are a special population that appears to be at higher risk of infection from H1N1 than others, and the severe illness and deaths in several pregnant women?underscore the need?to address these issues very carefully, as can be seen?in these case examples.?

All guidance from CDC on H1N1, regardless its a relationship to breastfeeding, should be considered interim and subject to change as new information becomes available.??CDC now maintains a link to all H1N1 guidance that is related to breastfeeding on the CDC breastfeeding homepage so that our partners can more easily access the most up-to-date recommendations.? The CDC breastfeeding homepage is?www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding?

?

Thank?you?again for your email?and?very helpful feedback.? Please let me know of any further questions I can address.

?

Sincerely,

?

Katherine
