I have permission to post from the mother. Baby is 5.5 weeks old.
Spontaneous, normal vaginal delivery at home in less than one hour. Birth
weight 9lbs. 9oz. Weight gain continues to be good. 3rd baby. Mom describes
this baby as more fussy, less content than her other two (also exclusively
breastfed). Mom has tried several diet changes, thinking the baby was gassy.
I worked with her on reducing the strength of her letdown and managing an
oversupply. She currently stays on one breast for 4.5 hours (has been doing
so for more than two weeks) and often nurses in an “against gravity”
position. She still feels that the flow is too strong for baby. Baby fusses
and arches her back and when she is put back on the empty breast, she
happily suckles. Mom thinks the letdown is not the problem, as she lets down
into a cloth. States breasts are very soft after a feeding, so I don’t think
oversupply is a problem. It seems to be simply a strong flow. I know the
baby will eventually grow into it, but until then, are there any other
suggestions I can offer this mother? All your help is greatly appreciated!
I’ve searched the archives, but can’t find any new suggestions.

Sincerely,

Sherée Young, RN, LLL

Mother to Chloe 5, Aiden 3, and Kellen 6 months old and happily nursing.
