pamala laments: Having noted others' experiences with edema and Mag
Sulphate and/or IV
fluids during labour I am now wondering if this kind of scenario is
*not* a
result of of the meds/interventions as we thought, but rather a symptom
of
pregnancy induced hypertension or some kind of postpartum edema (does it
have another name?) This case has set me back quite a bit - I am not
used
to being so totally ineffective!! How should this case have been
managed?

**************************
I don't know how it should have been managed, but manage it as best
you could. I had read some time ago that IV's can cause edema, and
delayed lactogenesis. Sorry no refs now. I had that experience with
my first- PIH at onset of labor, PRL for labor which lasted for 57
hours. It's hard to distinguish in that case.

Mine wasn't as severe, but I do remember being a giant blob, my
breasts were "not my own" and my daughter had difficulty latching on,
exacerbated by a know-it-all nurse, but helped by my confidence.
Milk came in after a week. I had copious milk, but I didn't have the
edema such as you describe.

Maybe your best bet is to encourage her to nurse frequently, assume
that she'll have plenty of milk, and see what happens. Maybe because I
didn't know it could cause problems I didn't worry..... ?
