As Kellie pointed out, nursing through pregnancy is unpredictable, and
is often best taken day-by-day -- no matter the mother's long-term
plans, she may have to adapt them as her individual situation unfolds..
Since the pregnancy is in the driver's seat, hormonally speaking, some
women do have a quick drop in supply. Some recent Lactnet posts
discussed certain situations where a baby around the mid-year needed to
be eating more than the available breastmilk, in which case formula
could be viewed as one of the developmentally appropriate "solids" being
introduced.

Along with every drop of her milk she's able to provide, the mother can
focus on both of them continuing to enjoy the time spent breastfeeding,
since older babies love the warm interaction. If the baby is getting
frustrated with the slow flow, the mother can think about providing the
other foods and formula first, and frequently offering "dessert" at the
breast,, with lots of skin-to-skin and compression, perhaps nursing
laying down a couple of times during the day to get some extra rest.
(Baby #1 will be crawling by the end of the pregnancy!) That way the
baby will continue to feel satisfied and peaceful at the breast, and
perhaps be gentler on the mother's tender nipples.

"Adventures in Tandem Nursing" and the articles from the LLLI website
and kellymom.com might help this mother feel like she's on some common
ground.
