Wow, this sure has been a heated debate (gee, I'm sorry, I couldn't
resist!). I have suggested the use of both heat and cold depending on
the situation (much like Nikki said in her later post). Warmth actually
helped me one time and cold was exactly what I need another. So I
listen to mom. If her tone is one of desperation, I might suggest
warmth first, briefly, to help her relax. I really understand your
physiologic logic, Linda, and I agree, physiologically speaking applying
heat to a swollen area does not make sense. But how often is helping a
mom more a matter of listening and helping her to relax and gain
confidence? I was once told by a very wise pediatrician that 10% of his
job was treating illnesses, 90% was listening to moms. I'd say in my
business it's about 2% "treating", 98% listening. We offer what works
for that mom at that particular moment in a caring, responsible way.
JMHO,

right now!)
