I read about homebirth when my husband was in medical school. Against ALL medical advice, I found a doctor who said if I wanted a homebirth I needed to attend a series of La Leche League meetings and HOME (home oriented maternity experience) group to be accepted into his practice. I went to LLL for 7 months, had an uneventful 8 hour birth and my son latched right on. I never was sore, engorged, leaked, gave a pacifier, or felt a letdown. I am a lazy person by nature, so side lying was no problem. I didn't even try to express until my second son, and back then, everyone I knew hand expressed (quicker and cheaper). Chicago in the 70's was a very breastfeeding oriented place to be. My third had no idea how to nurse, despite a 2 hour birth, and it took me a week to teach him. My Syrian neighbor, who had 5 homebirthed children and came to help with my others was aghast that I nursed right away, since she hadn't been allowed to nurse for 3 days in Syria as colostrum was bad. Karen Graham IBCLC, LLL who really thinks hospitals are the problem, as I see very few Amish women that don't know how to hold a baby or have initial problems. They also cross nurse, if there are problems, as most have a sister or two who is nursing.
