Hi,

My newest challenge is in regards to a new protien-rich formula being
promoted in our NICU. I believe the company is Ross - anyway, they have
convinced our staff that through "research" the new 30-cal liquid formula
should be added to breastmilk to increase calories, rather than using powdered
HMF.

Of course my main concern is that this reduces the amount of HM that the
baby will receive. It also concerns me that we are now going to add a liquid to
breastmilk which may increase the growth of E-Coli bacteria per the Human
Milk Banking Association of North America's guidelines on page 27 of their book
Best Practices in a Hospital Setting.

I just inserviced the nursing staff 2 days ago about the dangers of mixing
formula with breastmilk, and so they are confused, and so am I!! I wish I had
known about this prior to my inservice, but now I need your help in LACTNET
land. Is this formula being used widely in other hospitals? Is there any research
to show it should NOT be used?

Your help and insight is greatly appreciated. Particularly Nancy Wight, if you
are out there I would love to hear your thoughts.
