The view from a between a rock and a hard place:

By virtue of being a doctor on Lactnet, I am in the position of being in
the "HCP accused of doing something stupid regarding breastfeeding" group.
By virtue of being an IBCLC, I'm in the position of being in the
"Breastfeeding zealots, etc" group among my physician peers. If I took all
my marbles and went home - NOTHING WOULD CHANGE. Lactnet would be the same
and my peers would be at the same level of understanding regarding
breastfeeding. Instead, I stay to make a difference. Lactnet is the rich and
rewarding list that we have now because people stay to contribute and learn,
even if they occasionally take offense or disagree with the current of
posts. My physician peers are more willing to listen to what I say and ask
questions because I'll listen to them say things that I disagree with or
find disturbing with regards to breastfeeding. What does it cost me? A
little time and some aggravation.
But the benefits all around are worth it.

Lactnet is a wonderful source of breastfeeding information and worldwide
contacts.

Gail S. Hertz, MD, IBCLC
