Hello Friends,

I am hoping that someone can explain a baby's interesting behavior. The mother contacted me when the baby was 5 weeks old almost ready to give up from having sore cracked nipples for the entire five weeks. Baby is exclusively breastfed since coming home from the hospital where he was given 2 bottles after not urinating for the first 2 days. He was born weighing 3.170 kilos and weighed 4.500 kilos at four weeks. His oral structures look fine. His tongue seems larger than usual but he sucked fine on a finger. We worked on positioning which had been poor but the baby did not gape at the breast, he opened and closed his mouth over and over as if chewing. He would happily take the breast that way and eat fine, but Mom was in pain. On the rare occasion that he stopped the chewing motion and really gaped, they achieved a good latch. The mother says that he has been doing this since birth - he nursed immediately after delivery. What would cause a baby to do this and is there any way to stop it?

Thank you very much,
Chayn in Israel, IBCLC
