I'm unaware of any research reports, but anecdotally, I've worked with a couple of moms who had an early postpartum endometritis and lowered milk production. One of these moms had it after two pregnancies, the second was a twin pregnancy. As per Denise's thought re: retained placental fragment, this was brought to the attention of these moms and their HC providers said all placentas had come out easily and appeared intact. However, they were willing to take a  better look via u/s, which detected no fragments. No further s/s during postpartum indicated retained fragment -- no unusual cramping, bleeding, etc.

Although production improved slightly, it was never what is should have been based on breastfeeding management. The mothers partially breastfed for several months.
