I've been following the discussion of forcing babies to breast with avid
interest. Although I also encounter these difficult situations, one thing
did occur to me about "smooshing" the baby into the breast where he can't
breathe: Most mothers traditionally support the breast loosely, and when
learning the RAM technique, may temporarily smother the baby. If I am
working with a mom, I give extra care to shaping her breast into a wedge
that aligns with the baby's mouth-- this may be the "C" hold, or may be
modified to a "U" by dropping the elbow. Baby rarely gets smothered when
the breast is supported and shaped in this fashion, and maybe this helps.
