Ahlqvist M and Wirfält E. Beliefs concerning dietary practices during
pregnancy and lactation: a qualitative study among Iranian women living in
Sweden. Scand J Caring Sci 2000;14:105-111
Fourteen women of varied backgrounds from Iran, ranging in age from 29-85
years, were interviewed.
It emerged that diet was considered more important during BF than during
pregnancy. 'Major focuses of food and health beliefs surrounding childbirth
were facilitating delivery, recovery after giving birth, establishing
production of breast milk and restoring women's capacity to work.'
Post-partum food was to restore strength, while the pregnancy diet was
intended to create a strong and beautiful child, towards birth to limit
fetal growth through reduced carbohydrate intake, and give the mother
strength for labor.
The post-partum diet consisted of 'butter or oil, sugar, wheat flour,
almonds, nuts and/or saffron'. Diet was considered to affect the quality as
well as the quantity of breastmilk. Garlic, cabbage and onion were
considered inadvisable during BF because the milk's odor would make the
child refuse to drink it.
