our hospital puts baby on warmer and keeps it for about 4 hrs or more, and
its called transition.
i have these thougthts for you:
the baby is not on a heart monitor. often the nurses are at the desk and the
baby is not visible to them. the baby is visible to passersby in the window.
they do vital sign checks every so often, Q15 min?? i'm not sure. my point
is that they are not observing the baby.
frequenlty i have passed by a grunting baby in teh nursery, or a flaccid
baby on the warmer and comment to the nurse. most times the baby goesn into
level 2 then. just this week i commented on a grunting, flaccid baby, the
nurse said well he's a c/s; later i see her putting him under an oxyhood w/
iv's.
my point here is nurses need better assessment skills. they need to know NOT
TO BATHE a baby who is showing signs of distress. Geesh.
this is the argument i would present to them. it is far better to have
mother/baby together and a skillful nurse going in to check on them
frequently and informing parents of untoward symtptoms to report.
Recently a baby presented at about day 3 with poor feeding, lethargy at
home. the baby had cardiac defect, severe. the next step is to keep all
babies for 1 wk??? NO. Educate, inform the parents. Do followup calls and
early checkups/.
