The goal in our discussions regarding Medela and its failure to meet
its obligations under the Code has nothing to do with putting the
company out of business, nor is it related to the need some mothers
have to use bottles or the fact that a company conducts research or
states that it supports breastfeeding. The issue is how products within
the scope of the Code are marketed. It is not difficult to meet these
obligations but it takes a committment to the Code and a willingness to
understand that the Code exists to protect breastfeeding and
breastfeeding mothers, not deny them access to bottles and nipples.
Bottles and nipples can be purchased in any grocery store and at most
major discount stores, baby stores, etc. Bottles and nipples can be
included in pump packaging, just not marketed to the public. Contests
or promotions run by Medela with glass bottles as the prize is a
disappointing picture and a perfect example of a Code violation.
Perhaps feeding bottles and nipples are more profitable than pumps.
