Peter Ellison's chapter from "Breastfeeding: Biocultural Perspectives" is an
excellent summary of the relationship between bf and fecundity (ability to
become pregnant). This is a very complex relationship, and it isn't an
ON/OFF switch from "not fecund at all" to "fully fecund". It takes more
than just ovulation for a pregnancy to be successful as well.

And to counter all the "failed LAM" stories, I'll chime in that with my
daughter, I had 23 months of no menstrual periods post-partum, and my friend
had 33 months of no menstrual periods post-partum with her son. We were
both living in Africa at the time, and perhaps nursing even more often,
including at night, than many women in the US who breastfeed 'on a schedule'
even if they aren't consciously aware of it.
