Hello,
I had a couple of thoughts to add to the many good suggestions already
posted. The first thing that jumped out of the posting to me was that
the mother had decreased pumping to 4-5 x/day, because her supply was so
"good". That was a tipoff that it was probably going to decrease
anyway, and was hastened by the stress of the baby's sudden illness. We
encourage mothers to aim for 3 oz. x8/day to provide a buffer for those
times (which so many NICU babies go through).
When such decreases occur, nothing can replace 2-3 days of pumping q2h
(with a 4 hour sleep) or x11/day. I tell Moms this jump starts the
process, by signalling the body that more milk is needed; results
usually seen in 3-4 days.
