 A recent post stated:

"Mother nursed her until two hours before the procedure and as soon
as she indicated she
wanted to nurse after she woke up........ The staff again insisted
on NPO for
8 hours before the procedure, but Mom disregarded this and the staff

remarked at how relaxed and good humored the baby seemed to be this
time. Mom tried not to give it away!"

Good for her, however, I would hope that at some time she can relay
to the staff that she did nurse the baby less than 8 hours before
surgery. Otherwise, the assumption will be made that the baby was
relaxed in spite of not having nursed.
The same thing happens frequently when a mom makes her own decidion
regarding feeding her child instead of blindly following the HCP's
"order" to start solids, supplement with AIM, stop nursing, etc.
etc. As has been eloquently stated in other posts, there is often a
fear of going against the "authority figure" and following
instincts. Too often the HCP is seen as General Overall Dictator
rather than learned advisor. I can understand when a mom is
reluctant to swim upstream at the time, but hopefully we can empower
her at some time to "come clean" and let the HCP know that the good
results are not necessarily from his/her directives being followed.
If this is done enough times, he/she may begin to reconsider the
advice given.

Winnie Mading RNC, IBCLC - who also "played the game" with her Ped
when the kids were young, so can understand other new mom
reluctance. We tend to get more assertive as we get older.
