We've talked about labeling babies before on Lactnet. The perspective I
always keep uppermost in my mind is this: The baby who "will" not nurse
effectively (or at all) is a baby who *cannot* nurse effectively (or at
all). It's up to us to try to help the mother figure out what obstacles
might be getting in the baby's way and how to help the mother and baby get
around, over, or under those obstacles. I've never found labels that imply
negative volition on the part of the baby or negative personality
characteristics on the part of the baby to be helpful.
