Jane Heinig presented a continuing ed session at the LLLI conference in San
Francisco.
She presented some of the work students in their labs are working on - and
this article
should be on some of that work.
The concern is that women's signs & symptoms are so variable and lab testing
for yeast growth has been so often negative, that providers may not
recognize or want to treat for yeast.

Their studies indicate that the lactoferrin in milk samples often prevents
the growth of
yeast in lab cultures. They looked at various additives and found that by
adding iron
at certain doses, the lactoferrin was inactivated and the yeast grew!

Further studies will be correlating symptoms with culture results -
soreness, burning,
shiny skin, flaky skin, breast pain...

Hope this helps,

Judy Hulse RN, IBCLC

Subject: Article on yeast in milk

Has anyone read this article?

Morrill J; Pappagianis D; Heinig M; Lönnerdal B; Dewey K
Detecting Candida albicans in human milk. 2003 Jan;41(1):475-8.
VTUVER reports holding volume 41 or year 2003 of J Clin Microbiol.

I have just ordered a copy from Loansome Doc, but was wondering if
anyone has seen this yet.

Best, Kathleen
