Cindy asks about the "Idiot's Guide to Breastfeeding" and
"Breastfeeding for Dummies".
Yes, the titles can seem a little crass and insulting. However they
need to be taken in the context of the whole series of books. Both
seemed to start out as guides to computer use by the "computer
illiterate". The publishers expanded to providing simplified guides
to a number of subjects well beyond computers. There's even one
that's an "Idiot's Guide to Religions" (or "Religion for
dummies"-both series sound so similar that I can't keep them
straight) that is a pretty good introduction to comparative
religion. I have one of the BF ones, but haven't read it yet.
Quick cursory glance didn't make anything jump out as being
terrible. If the breastfeeding one is the only book in the series
one sees, it would come across in a very negative way. Personally,
when I first saw the BF one, it struck me that it was great the
publishers considered breastfeeding important enough to be worthy of
one of their books.
One of the first things I want to do once I retire next month is to
catch up on reading all the books I have picked up in the last few
years but haven't had the time or energy to examine thoroughly.
This will certainly be one of the first.

Winnie
