Michelle,

I have an MA in Counseling, and I use it *constantly* when working with
moms and babies. Processing not just failed breastfeeding, but childbirth
as well. I would STRONGLY, HUGELY, encourage anyone who runs in to this to
either take the LLL listening course (is it HRE now?), which I have heard
great things about, or if you live within range of a university with a
counseling degree program, sign up for a course called COUNSELING METHODS
or something close to that. There will be lots and lots of role play with
clearly set out ground rules. I can remember my prof jumping up and
shouting when we goofed. He was a bit rougher than an LLLL would be, but
the immediate feedback was great. The #1 lesson I learned was never to ask
a question. Now, we need info for our charting and stuff, but once the
scenario switches to being a therapeutic experience for mom, I am a big fan
of never asking or probing or hinting. I reflect back mom's thoughts and
feelings to her and help her process while keeping myself completely out of
the way. And you bet I have a list for referrals!

It can be overwhelming, even with my training, and as an introvert I have
to then go off and process to be able to not carry mom's pain with me.
It's so worth it, though. Much like other bf work, it's important not to
get in above our heads, beyond the level of our skills/training/experience,
and know when to refer.

All the best,
Lynn Carter OFS MA LLLL IBCLC :D
