Whenever I have questions (I get a lot due to editing the California
Breastfeeding website: http://cdph.ca.gov/Breastfeeding) about banked and
donor milk I refer to two resources. One costs money and one is free - but
I REALLY want to support BOTH of them, so I unabashedly recommend the
purchase of the Human Milk Banking Association's "2006 Best Practice for
Expressing, Storing and Handling of Mother's Own Milk in Hospital and at
Home" which can be ordered at: http://www.hmbana.org/index.php?mode=pubs
Yes, it is expensive ($50) - but I consider it:
 * my way of donating to an organization I truly believe in
 * a resource that, as an IBCLC I cannot be without - as important to me as
Hale's latest book.

The other is a free resource from the California Perinatal Quality Care
Collaborative (CPQCC) http://www.cpqcc.org/

Their Quality Improvement toolkits can be accessed via:
http://www.cpqcc.org/quality_improvement/qi_toolkits

You should have in your "favorites" or even downloaded in your computer (I
don't say print it, as it's a lot of paper):
* Nutritional Support of the VLBW Infant: Part I
* Nutritional Support of the Very Low Birth Weight Infant Part II

These are VERY evidence-based resources with LOTS of useful appendices, and
include a lot of information that is useful even if you're NOT working with
VLBW babies.

(By the way, I unabashedly referred you to our California website - we have
had more hits and downloads than any other webpage in the California
Department of Public Health's website - and that data is making
breastfeeding rise in the priority list for the Department - you know what
they say, what you count ... COUNTS!)

AND if you have resources and are willing to share your own protocols,
charting methods or tools that can be used to improve hospital policies -
please send them to me with your permission to post, and I can add them to
the on-line toolkit we use to implement breastfeeding hospital policies!
