I really like the Volvo & Ivy League analogies – begun
by Michelle and continued by Jacqui:

Imagine your child could have the safety of a Volvo
and the intellectual stimulation of a Harvard
education. The Volvo’s in the driveway and the full
ride to Harvard is promised in writing in your child’s
name. Now imagine someone pulls a switch with your
child’s birthright. You wake up one morning and
there’s a dented Yugo in the driveway and a promissory
note for the local community college replaces the note
for Harvard.

I’m forever referring to breastfeeding’s ability to
“finish” or stimulate brain growth (Harvard) and the
immune system (Volvo) according to blueprints already
written for each of us to mothers who just don’t
believe Harvard and Volvos are birthrights.

The whole thing is like a skip down the yellow brick
road. Dorothy, the scarecrow, and the tin man have no
idea what they have. Every time I see that movie the
big-hearted scarecrow yearns to feel, the tin man
riddles his brain, and Dorothy runs away to get home.
We’re all of us watching that movie in hospitals, in
support meetings, and in life. We point out feeding
cues, cluck over pretty latches, and praise the flow
of milk and hormones. But only Dorothy can discover
she’s already home.

It has something to do with being Dorothy in the
world, and not Donald or Dave…
