There is now a great deal of information and community education around the
area of PPD. Jean Driscoll has written some excellent articles and books on
the subject. In New Jersey, there is now legislation that has been passed
requiring all women to be screened by their OBs and on discharge from the
hospital. Pediatricians are also encouraged to screen. There has been a
campaign in NJ called "peak Up When You are Down." It has educated consumers
and health care providers on PPD. There especially has been a state
initiative to education health care providers about what PPD is and
encourage various treatments. I have been involved in some of the education
provided to the professions for my input on breastfeeding. Treatments
suggested include, mothers support groups, counselling, medications, or some
combination depending on the mother's condition. PPD is treatabl.
Breastfeeding can continue. Screening for PPD and talking openly allows
those who suffer in silence (and there are a lot of these women, even ones
who are breastfeeding) get well and go on to mother their babies with joy.
MaryJo Cody has been an inspiration for New Jersey's very woman's centered
legislation. Ann Anderson, RN.IBCLC
