Announcement: Department of Labor, Request for Information: Reasonable
Break Time for Nursing Mothers

The Department of Labor has published in the Federal Register a Request
for Information on the recent amendment to the Federal Labor Standards Act
that requires employers to provide reasonable break time and a place for
nursing mothers to express  milk.

~~~ Having a reasonable place and time to express milk is certainly one
accommodation that can benefit many, in terms of helping to preserve a
relationship that, on a population level, results in significantly lowered  health
care costs to the society at large. This is not an entitlement only for
the mother and baby (or babies) - this is not simply 20 minutes, twice a day
that others "deserve" as well but don't get unless they are nursing a baby.
This  has the potential to shift the entire health curve of the population
in a  healthier direction. The one point missing is this: "nursing mothers"
are  mothers whose babies nurse. Also considered should be the feasibility
and  tremendous pay-off of actually making workplaces a place where babies can
come  and nurse from these nursing, not simply expressing, mothers.
That would be my comment, but I doubt it's what their looking for. If
anyone thinks it is worth sending anyway, I will send it. I welcome  comments.
Peace,
