I did not mean to imply that wanting to rent a pump when not
planning to work outside the home was ALWAYS a warning sign.
Certainly having initial breastfeeding challenges is a valid
reason. And moms may have reasons they haven't shared with the
hospital LC. What I intended was that it CAN in some cases be
because mom has strong doubts about her ability to fully
breastfeed-these can come from family members who undermine her
efforts, HCPs who do the same, or a lack of committment on her
part. She may feel or even state: "Breastfeeding is nice, but it
doesn't really matter whether baby gets it direct or in a bottle."
When speaking of "warning signs", they are indicators that that mom
may be more likely to experience certain problems in the future-not
that those problems will automatically occur or that they won't
occur without warning signs. I like to refer to them as "yellow
lights" rather than dire warnings. They may indicate underlying
problems, attitudes, etc. that can impact on mom's overall approach
to breastfeeding The LC needs to be aware of them, but uses them to
help her assess the entire breastfeeding relationship and not to
make decisions based solely on them.
