Hi fellow lactnetters!

I think I've figured out a way to post messages finally.
I'll start with the easy first. Yesterday in our local paper appeared the
article regarding the state of MN accusing the two largest infant formula
companies of conspiring to fix prices for a 12 year period. It alleges that
they agreed to ban direct advertising of formula and exchange pricing
information, including advanced notice of price increases. I'll keep you
posted as new info develops.

Now the infant who I feel like I'm flying by the seat of my pants and not
getting anywhere. Born 4/13/95 BW 8#9oz(3885) c-birth after 36 hour labor for
fetal distress. 4/16 discharge 7#14oz(3569) nursing well at discharge but
initially slow to start. 1 week check 8#6oz according to mom in clinic. Called
first few weeks with c/o sore nipples that resolved with positioning, but not
appreciating fullness between feedings. Infant feeding 2-21/2 hours falling
asleep after first 5 minute at breast. Suggested switch nursing and undressing
infant, listen for swallowing encouraged to call back if problem continues.

Did not hear from her again until 6/2 infant weight past month 9#3oz and
holding Did see physician and he told her to put the infant on a four schedule
not looking at the total picture and seeing lack of weight gain.

Saw me 6/5 wt. 8#10.3oz(3921)! My heart was in my throat when I saw him!
Sent him to different physician to make sure something else wasn't going on.
Mom home with rental pump, sns,formula(2-3oz) at each feeding. return wt check
3 days. Watched him breastfeed with very poor results(I'm sure he didn't have
the energy.

He has done very well over the last month with weight and now is at
11#1.4oz(5030) but mom still using 20-25oz of formula and only able to pump
10oz of breast milk per 24 after feedings. I did suggest taking a break and
pump only for 3-4 days to see if we could get a handle on the total volume she
was able to produce from one day to the next. On average 14-17 ounces. Infant
still a extremily lazy breastfeeder although stays awake now at the breast and
fusses before letdown occurs then swallows 5-7 tops. Mom is not on birth
control.Infant had been taking 11/2 hour to feed at the breast. Encouraged mom
to spend no more than 20-30 minutes and then top after with what if left of
the formula/HM.

Any suggestion on how to increase her supply?

Thanks
Cheryl Stuhldreher
