I have a patient with a 6 month old solely breastfed, she is now pregnant
again- she now knows BF is not a form of birth control-
Dear Friends:
The Lactational Amenorrhea Method, when used correctly is 98-99%
effective; it is recognized by the WHO as a method of child spacing. The World Bank
has a technical paper about LAM as a way for a country to conserve its
resources.
The progestin-only pill is 99% effective ......just for comparison.
A woman must be breastfeeding exclusively, including at night. No
missed feeds due to pacifiers. No long intervals between feeds. Her baby must be
under 6 months old. Pumping doesn't count (personal communication Miriam
Labbok MD). And she can't have started her menses.
    warmly,
