<< Because Teresa was a diligent advocate
for her grandson and his mother, the outcome was great. Imagine the more
common scenario where the family is not as well informed, they are under
great stress, no one is advocating for them and every piece of information
they get about breastfeeding is incorrect and inconducive to success. You
can pretty much count on the baby going home bottle fed with a mother with no
milk. . >>

I have watched this exact scenario played out so many times in our local
hospitals. The problems are many. Parents feel so lucky to escape the control
of the NICU that they never want to look back, even with just a letter of
complaint. Parents have no awareness that they were mistreated, violated,
etc and come away thinking they got good care and even feel grateful for the
warnings against bf, the "faster growth" from AIM, the ability to sleep at
night, etc. Then they believe they did everything possible to make bf work,
but it just didn't. Hospitals count these mothers in their bf statistics, b/c
the mothers are often still pumping some and "trying" to nurse when they go
home. I, like Kathleen believe law suits will be the change agent, but
hospitals do such a good job convincing mothers they are "lucky their babies
are alive and that is all that matters", that most parents will never do
this. Accountability is critical, but it seems a long time in coming.
