I think that would be wonderful, and I'll ask the parents if they'd like
this, after they go home--but I think the parents would very much
agree. I just got off the phone with the dad, last night went better,
although there were the constant separation from the parents to do the
weight check, the ped evaluation, and the hearing screening. I guess
the baby screamed through the hearing test, and they finally called mom
in to nurse the baby through the test, even though it is against
protocol to have mom in that room. Mom got the baby latched on
immediately and the test was completed without problems. Uh, duh. Baby
is gaining weight now, and the nurses stayed away while the baby was
breastfeeding (at one point yesterday the baby was trying to latch on
and the nurse came in, took the baby away from the mother forcefully,
wrapped him up even though the mother was saying he likes to nurse skin
to skin, and then manhandled the mom's breast, with the nurse grabbing
the mother's breast and trying to force it into the baby's mouth--then
everyone was upset when the baby cried and cried, with the mother crying
along with them, and finally they called the social worker yet again
(mom is 18) because the mother was too upset and stressed and maybe
needed some "help." It's enough to make you want to scream along with
the baby.

I am just appalled at the lack of professionalism with the hospital and
their claim to be trying to become "baby friendly" but their "protocols"
being so very unfriendly.
