I agree that none of us will probably ever know the truth in this case.   
 One question did come up in my mind over and over: WHERE WAS THIS   
CHILD'S FATHER?  There's a lot of talk of how the mother couldn't see the   
weight loss, etc., but couldn't the father?  Didn't he have any visits   
with his child? Couldn't he have insisted on taking the baby to a   
doctor/hospital?  It takes two to tango.  Both parents were needed to   
care for this boy.  We all failed little Tyler, right on down the line.   
 Shameful.
