Has anyone else heard this? Pediatrician informed mom that her 9 month old
should be sleeping through the night by now. Also, that she should not be
nursing during the night because the baby falls asleep and the milk stays on
his teeth. (Like they don't do that during the day?)

Hi, Linda,

I think this is pretty common advice. I weaned my first child on purpose at
13 mos. because the popular baby books said that you needed to wean by first
birthday or they would get dental caries :-( Lactnet's archives are filled
with incidents with dentists because of this belief.

The belief that a 9 month old *should* sleep through the night stems from
the "what is common is not necessarily normal" mentality and personal belief
filter based on American hx of bottle feeding and putting baby in its own
room.

One bit of information that I try to offer moms when they talk about sleep
issues is that issues like where baby sleeps & not responding to a baby at
night are parenting choices, and not taught in medical school. Parents see
doctors for diagnoses. When pedis offer judgments on sleeping arrangements,
or nursing at night, it's coming from their personal parenting beliefs and
opinions, not evidence based medical practice:-)

Warmly,
