I've known many LLL families throughout the past 20 years who have delayed
solids till 9 or 10 months (one even 12 months) due to allergies. My own
grandson who had a some eczema, was breaking out in hives at three weeks if he
came in contact with colonges or baby lotions, and broke out in a rash around
his mouth each time mom ate eggs didn't start solids till around 9 1/2 months
and nursed for a total of 30 months. Both parents have lots of allergies and
mom has asthma. He is six now, extremely bright and intelligent, very
healthy, and eats a good variety of foods. My usual advice to parents
concerned with allergies and wanting to delay solids is to have the baby's
hemoglobin checked at seven or eight months and if iron count is good, just
continue nursing only for awhile.
