I think a new baby's overwhelming need to be "attached" and "too" dependent
is a survival mode thing and it scares people in our western culture. They
automatically think baby will stay too attached and dependent, of course those of
us with grown breastfed babies know this is usually just the opposite :-)

Dear Friends:
Isn't it amazing how people think that there is something wrong with a
baby being a baby? Babies are dependent; they can't help it. Yet our culture
teaches that this is wrong (more paradox here) and must be trained
away/ignored/or substitute some plastic gadget.
I have had some success with asking new mothers, "Who did you call when
you got engaged (or, 'found out you were pregnant', if she isn't married)?"
Most usually reply, "My mother." Then a reply can be, "Right! And you are a
grown woman. This baby is going to feel that same way about you!"
Another successful comment, that also makes them laugh, is that "Baby
doesn't want to stay a baby, they want the car keys as soon as possible!"
    warmly,
