Leslie: The book BEING THERE is an outstanding book to recommend to
breastfeeding moms who need that extra push to be with their babies. I've
read SEQUENCING, HOME BY CHOICE, FROM DEADLINES TO DIAPERS, and several
others and found BEING THERE to be the most heart wrenching and convincing
of all to encourage mothers to find a way to be with their babies. I know
I risk losing my feminist badge when I say things like this, but my
interpretation of feminism is the right to choose. We lead many well
educated mothers to believe that they are "wasting their education" if they
stay home with their kids. We also have convinced an entire generation of
families that it is necessary to have two incomes to live. Not true. I
have many friends who are single parents and have to work and leave their
children, but they somehow make it on one income. When two-parent families
really take a serious look at what they spend money on, they see just how
much they waste and how much is work-related (lunches out, commuting,
expensive clothing and bribes for kids who want their attention). It is
imperative to the future of humanity that we start to demonstrate to
children that they matter. And, that may mean living in a smaller house,
with older cars, getting take-out two nights per week, manicures,
expensive hair cuts, and not going on expensive vacations or even weekend
get-aways (and of course...FORMULA AND BOTTLES).
Chris...who is obviously in a ranting mood
