K. Jean;

Two Questions:

1. Why do you no longer suggest "shaking and stroking the breast" before expression?
I have found that this is a great technique, not only to aid in relaxation and MER, but also to assist with releasing any ducts that are beginning to plug. I remember Gini Baker (during my studies) instructing me to lean over and shake my breasts prior to pumping (I have suffered w/ plugged ducts and 6 rounds of mastitis) and it worked quite well!

2. Do you think using the term "fingertip expression" may increase rates of plugged ducts as well as bringing back the whole "pinching" issue?
Using the full hand seems like a much more effective way of removing milk throughly from the breast. Ducts extend all the way back through the breast and many large breasted women have no choice but to use the reverse C postion.

Love to know your thoughts;

Julia Augur IBCLC, RLC
