Hi all-
Since my post of a few days ago, I have had several e-mail requests for more
information on how to establish community breastfeeding stations. Our
requirements were small (a quiet, clean spot w/ chair or seating). We
offered the station free to the first 25 businesses, and after that $25 was
charged. They received a window decal, and were on a map we had printed, of
all the participating stations. The map was distributed large-scale in the
community, so gave good advertising to the businesses. On the reverse side of
the map, we had photos of moms, dads, and babies, and some good reasons to
BF. We of the Breastfeeding Task Force divided up the categories of
prospective stations (churches, grocery stores, dept. stores, restaurants,
etc.) and visited and wrote letters to encourage participation. We were
funded in large part by Florida Healthy Start, but there would be other ways
such as small grants, money from state programs like WIC, etc. We presented
this idea at a Healthy Start conference last year, and I am glad to share the
info with anyone interested. I think it has been a very positive program. It
has brought breastfeeding into a sort of "officially approved" status. I
live in a community with a large retirement population, and BF attitudes have
not always been the best! I'd like nothing better than to see breastfeeding
stations EVERYWHERE : ) If you need more info, feel free to e-mail me.
