Kathleen's observation #1 seems to be true in my area.

I just wanted to add that many "educated" women (whom studies shown are
more likely to breastfeed in the US) often have heavy student loan
obligations which require them to return to paid employment.  Even
bankruptcy doesn't get rid of student loan debt. (In 1987, I was only in
$20,000 debt; some of my younger colleagues have triple that amount.)

I also run into quite a few  "professional" women who return to work
because their job has the health insurance, and their partners are
self-employed.
