My name is TongeLa Zwanziger and I am a junior 2 nursing student at the
University of North Dakota. I am in my second semester of Childbearing
and have started my OB clinicals at our Birthing Center. I have been a
participant of this listserv since the end of August and I have enjoyed
reading and pondering over the many topics discussed.
I am interested about breastfeeding because I am an expectant mom and
as a future nurse, want to help other mothers with their experience. My
client, who is a teenage daughter, wants to breastfeed even though she is
not knowledgeable on the subject but her mother discourages her from the
idea because she says, "It will be to hard for her when she goes back to
school. She won't have time." Now the daughter has chosen to bottle feed
when her baby is delivered.
I did some research about attitudes on infant feeding and breastfeeding
support in adolescents. Bear and Volpe (2000) conducted a study to
determine if breastfeeding education given by LCs would increase the
initiation rate in pregnant adolescents that participated in a high school
adolescent pregnancy program. The results from the study clearly show
that there was an increase in initiation by adolescents who did
participate in the breastfeeding educational classes.
Burt, Dykes, Edwards, and Moran (2003) performed a study in the United
Kingdom on adolescent support needs in those who have initiated
breastfeeding. The areas of support were: emotional, esteem,
instrumental, informational, and network. The most influential people
that were key supporters were the adolescent's mother, the adolescent's
partner, and the midwife.
A study by Reid, Scott, and Shaker (2001) concluded that attitudes play
an important role in infant feeding choices. The sudy also pointed out,
that parents who formula fed their babies continue to be less
knowledgeable about breastfeeding.
My questions are how can I be more supportive for my expectant mother
when she wants to breastfeed but her mother discourages her from it so
that now she wants to bottle feed? How can I help her feel that her
feeding choice will be a wonderful and memorable experience for her that
she is hoping it to be? Also, do I need and would it help to educate the
daughter's mother too on breastfeeding to make her more aware and
supportive of breastfeeding even though she stongly favors bottle feeding?

Thank you,
TongeLa Zwanziger SN
