Hi everyone,
I've long been puzzled about why the studies on breastfeeding and asthma have such mixed results compared with studies of other illnesses, which almost invariably show a clear advantage to breastfeeding. As my own children have had mild asthma, it interests me but I don't feel I have a good understanding of asthma or of the immune system in general. So I'd like to ask what might be a silly question, since I've been wondering about it for a while.
Is it possible that breastfed children will exhibit more symptoms of asthma and allergies because they have stronger immune systems which react more noticeably or measurably to irritants/environmental triggers than children who were ABM-fed? So in other words what looks like a weakness (asthma or allergy symptoms) is due to a stronger immune system which mounts a more vigorous defense? I'd love to hear if I'm way off base or there may be a kernel of truth in my idea.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can give me,
Marcia McCoy, IBCLC
