I've just done a Medline search (should have done so before posting to Lactnet) and have found that there is plenty of evidence to support the hypothesis that vulnerability to infection is increased if children are stressed so I don't need help with this one now!
However, I have a question that I have not been able to find an answer to.....would changing environments abruptly make a child more vulnerable to illness ie do children build up immunity to pathogens in the environment they live in over time and if they abruptly change environments might they find slightly different pathogens to which they have less resistence? Does this sort of thing also happen with adults who migrate? I'm wondering whether breastmilk might have a particular benefit for intercountry adopted children because of the change in environment. Any clues where I might find answers to this question appreciated!
