I sympathize with Pam's dissenting view and agree with many of her
observations. However, I also think Micky is very wise and makes many good
points.

My personal opinion is that HB is neither intrinsically good nor bad...it is simply
an OPTION for parents to use, regardless of how they feed or nurture their
child.

Sure, a bottle-feeding, restrait-based parent WILL use HB techniques to
foster distance between them and their child; but a breastfeeding,
attachment-based parent can use HB techniques when 'all else fails' or when
they simply know their baby's cues and respond correctly.

It might be said that HB techniques when used by a breastfeeding, *non-
attachment* based parent could hinder the bond and the establishment of the
milk supply; however, I beg to differ. I think these would be the parents who
tend to use CIO (cry it out) anyway, and I would much rather see them
nuture their child in the HB way then to follow a CIO method.

Personal experience: I myself used HB techniques LONG before Harvey Karp
was ever around! It was with my 2nd child, who never nursed-to-sleep until
she was 13 months old. She breastfed beautifully, but awake, and would not
allow me to soothe her at the breast, ever. She used the breast as food
only. In order to get her to stop crying and to sleep (not colic, just needing
to be soothed to sleep), I had to use ALL FIVE of the "S's" and I just figured
them out myself. When I finally read HB 8 years after that experience, I felt
so freakin' smart for having followed my instincts!

Blessings!
